They may not have been the lead characters, but no true Western was complete without a trusty sidekick. Sidekicks were loyal friends who provided emotional connections to the audience, conveyed plot information and were often the comic relief in films. George “Gabby” Hayes was the most famous among them, but many others found fame in this role.

Join Arizona’s Official Western Film Historian Charlie LeSueur as he discusses the roles, and rules, of life as a sidekick to some of the most famous cowboys to ride across the silver screen.
