Tucson JCC was on list of alleged terrorist targets

The Associated Press reported yesterday that a man charged with plotting a terrorist attack on a motor vehicle office in metro Phoenix had also expressed intent to target the Tucson Jewish Community Center last year. To read the full story, go to tucson.com.

“We have spoken with our law enforcement partners and we’ve been assured that law enforcement is not aware of any existing, credible threat to the JCC,” Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona President and CEO Stuart Mellan told Arizona Jewish Life. “The reported statements to law enforcement, as the media is reporting, occurred roughly one year ago.”

Mahin Khan, 18, of Tucson was arrested July 1 on terrorism-related charges. An FBI agent testifying at Khan’s bond hearing today in Phoenix cited a conversation from October 2015 in which he allegedly stated his intention to attack the Tucson J, according to the Associated Press.

“The Tucson J is very mindful of security issues and our priority is to protect our members, guests and community,” Tucson J President and CEO Todd Rockoff wrote in a letter to members of The J. “We are continually vigilant and are in touch with our local law enforcement agencies on an ongoing basis, including today, to insure our members and guests are safe and secure.”
