Shavuot around the state

Shavuot begins at sundown on Saturday, June 8 and ends on the evening of Monday, June 10.

Although its origins are founded in an ancient grain harvest festival, Shavuot has long been identified with the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai seven weeks after the exodus from Egypt.

There are many locations in the Valley and in Tucson that are holding all-night Torah study sessions along with celebrations involving cheesecake and ice cream, as eating dairy products during Shavuot are customary.

For over 100 years the Reform movement marked the Shavuot holiday with a Confirmation Service. Shavuot is not just for youngsters!
The holiday reminds us that 3500 years ago Moses “stood up” for the Jewish people by delivering the Torah to them and carrying them on his shoulders to the Promised Land.
Take part in our community Tikkun Leil Shavuot, study session on Erev Shavuot (the celebration of the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai). Join Rabbi Louchheim and Cantor Cohen for an exploration of what it means to “stand up and be counted” to receive Torah today. Join us for Havdallah, study and a dairy dessert reception at 7:30 pm.
RSVP to Sarah Bollt, sarah@octucson.org, or 520-900-7027.

The awe and mystery of the revelation of Torah at Sinai are celebrated with Torah study and everyone’s favorite dairy dessert at the Tikkun L’eil Shavu’ot Service, “All-Night” Study session and Ice Cream Social, Saturday, June 8th at  8 pm, at Temple Emanu-El.  This year, Rabbi Batsheva Appel and other four other scholars will each teach about one book of the Torah in our study session entitled, “Black Fire on White Fire: Guarding The Eternal Flame of Torah.”
The evening begins with the brief, music-filled Shavu’ot Festival Services led by Rabbi Batsheva Appel and Cantorial Soloist Marjorie Hochberg, followed by an Ice Cream Social, with everyone present enjoying luscious ice cream with all kinds of delicious toppings, as well as other dairy desserts. We will have some non-dairy options as well. Then, we’ll study Torah all night (well, until about 11:00 pm).
There is no charge for Tikkun L’eil Shavu’ot, but all are invited to bring a dairy dessert to share. Please call 520-327-4501 to let us know that you’ll be coming!
