Brandeis Prof. speaks
Jun 8 @ 7:00 pm

Brandeis University Professor to speak on “The Shifting Alliances in The Middle East and their Effect on Israel”

Dr. Reuven Kimelman, professor of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA will discuss how the growing Sunni Shiite divide has changed Israel’s relationship with other countries in the region. The Sunni countries (Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, Morocco and even Saudi Arabia) threatened by Iran and its Shiite allies are establishing closer political and military ties with Israel. What does this mean for the prospects of future peace in the Middle East? What is the impact of President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran?

Professor Kimelman will speak on Monday June 8th from 7 PM – 9 PM at the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center, 12701 N Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85254.     Admission is free.

The evening is being sponsored by Brandeis National Committee Phoenix Chapter in conjunction with the Brandeis Alumni Association and the JCC.

Torah Studies @ Jewish Learning Center
Jun 10 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

What is Torah Studies?

Torah Studies is a weekly text-based Torah study program offered in 275 cities on six continents. Torah Studies was founded in 2004 to provide instructors with well-researched, in-depth classes on the weekly Torah portion. Torah Studies enables students of all backgrounds to gain a true appreciation of cardinal Jewish beliefs and practices.

The Torah Studies Experience

In each session, the Torah Studies student encounters a multi-sensory learning experience including a mix of Jewish texts, discussions, learning activities, illustrative anecdotes, visual aids, and digital multimedia. Jewish texts are weaved together to deepen the student’s understanding of a profound new Torah insight. Lessons focus on contemporary topics of Jewish interest, including personal, social, political, and economical issues. Student textbooks contain readings carefully selected from the entire gamut of Jewish literature including traditional and modern sources. The Torah Studies instructor acts as the guide-on-the-side, rather than the sage-on-the-stage, utilizing modern pedagogic techniques to revolutionize a tradition of classical Jewish learning.
