An exclusive screening of the Nancy Spielberg-produced movie “Above and Beyond” will be held on Thursday, May 12 at the historic Beth Hebrew Synagogue in Downtown Phoenix.  The event is a joint effort among the Bureau of Jewish Education ACT Program, Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix NowGen and Business & Professionals programs, and JNFuture in honor of Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israeli Independence Day).

The film will be introduced by local author Craig Weiss co-author of the book “My Brother’s Keeper: American Volunteers in Israel’s War for Independence 1947-1949.” His book was the basis for “Above and Beyond.”

The screening is hosted at Beth Hebrew to recognize the Spielberg family’s long-term connection to the temple – Ms. Spielberg’s brother, Steven Spielberg, became a bar mitzvah at Beth Hebrew.

Tickets are $18 and include movie snacks and beverages. A portion of the ticket proceeds will benefit foundations that support lone soldiers in the IDF.

“The Diary of Anne Frank” @ Hale Centre Theatre

This lovely, tender drama is based on true events. Anne Frank is a Jewish girl in hiding during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam in World War II. She, along with seven others, survive for two years in the sealed–off upper rooms of the annex of her father’s office building in Amsterdam. This is a story of courage, hope, and the triumph of the human spirit.

“You Can Help Prevent Child Abuse” @ Bradford Room at Oakwood Clubhouse

“YOU CAN HELP PREVENT CHILD ABUSE”

Please join Temple Havurat Emet Sisterhood on Friday, May 13, 2016 at 11:30 am for a delicious lunch followed by a discussion about child abuse prevention.

This is a worthwhile and necessary discussion and is sadly, very, very important in today’s society.

Owen Fabert will speak to us and we hope to have a lively discussion following his words.

Lunch will be served at noon in the Bradford Room at the Oakwood Clubhouse and will consist of Cranberry Chicken on a Croissant, Side Salad, Flourless Butterscotch Torte Dessert and Coffee, Ice Tea.

This looks to be a timely and topical discussion. Please plan on joining us for the event.

Born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in a Conservative Jewish family, he served as a co-founder of Beth Chaverim in Washington, DC until moving to Iowa where he was a longstanding Board Member of Congregation Beth Shalom and a representative to the Jewish Community Relations Commission in Des Moines. Lewis is the co-author with his wife Diane of the book Madly in Love Forever: A Guide to True and Lasting Love. Lewis and his wife Diane have a blended family of five young adult children.

Parent’s Night Out @ East Valley JCC

Take back your Saturday nights with a chance to spend an evening away from your children and leave the babysitting up to the JCC!

We provide experienced JCC staff, games, crafts, movies, friends, and fun while you enjoy an evening out on the town!

If you order a Pizza Dinner, The cost is $30 for the first child and $20 for each additional child.

Without dinner, the cost is $25 for the first child and $15 for each additional child.

Exciting Things Are Happening at PNO!

Parents’ Night Out forthe kids means:

* Experienced JCC staff and summer counselors leading games, crafts, and fun!

* Spending an evening with your JCC and camp friends!

* Separate movies for younger and older children!

Parents’ Night Out for the parents means:

* Your children are safe and engaged with experienced JCC staff leading games, crafts, and fun!

* Your children are being cared for by staff who are first aid/cpr certified and have their fingerprint clearance cards!

* Your children are having fun!

Our preschool age children will view their movie in a carpeted room on a tv while our school age children will have a movie projected onto the wall in our multipurpose room!

All participants are encouraged to bring sleeping bags or blankets to make themselves comfortable for the movie!

Families are encouraged to send a snack with their children if they wish as long as they are nut-free.

As always, our infants and toddlers will follow their own schedule with all snacks coming from the child’s home.
