The Life, Times & Music of Benny Goodman: A Musical and Historical Review Wednesday, April 25, 6:30 – 8 pm

This installment of the Jewish Jazz Connection Series will focus specifically on the music of Benny Goodman, who is credited with heralding in the “Swing Era.”  His band was the first to perform a jazz concert at Carnegie Hall in 1938 — AND the first multi-racial band to play at Carnegie Hall at a time when music, like most society, was very much segregated.  He also included African American composers’ works in his band repertoire at a time when such things were virtually unheard of.  Goodman’s career spanned 60 years, from New Orleans Dixieland, to Swing, onto the birth of Bebop and then Cool Jazz, making full circle as he delved back into the Classical music where his initial studies as a child prodigy had begun. $12/ $10 members – Ballroom
