This is Jewish Food? Who Knew? @ Tucson JCC
Mar 11 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Author and Chef Amelia Saltsman to offer Cooking Demonstration and Tasting at the Tucson JCC
This is Jewish Food? Who Knew?
Friday, March 11 from 2 – 4 pm

The Tucson Jewish Community Center (the Tucson J) is pleased to partner with the Tucson Festival of Books to welcome author and chef Amelia Saltsman to the Tucson J for a special cooking demonstration and tasting in The J’s new Demonstration Kitchen on Friday, March 11 from 2 – 4 p.m. Tickets are $15 for the demonstration and tasting or $35 with a signed cookbook, The Seasonal Jewish Kitchen. Please call the Tucson J for reservations or go on line at tucsonjcc.org for registration. Seating is limited. Please RSVP no later than March 7.

Writer, teacher, and award-winning author Amelia Saltsman is passionate about helping people make the connection between small-farmed foods and real-life meals. She is committed to raising what she calls the “food literacy” rate: knowing how, when, and where our food is grown (and by whom); knowing how to cook a simple, healthy meal; and understanding the local and global impact our food choices have on our families and communities.

Saltsman has channeled both her values and her passions into her latest cookbook, “The Seasonal Jewish Kitchen.” Guided by the lunar calendar, the book offers a fresh approach to Jewish cooking. Her recipes acknowledge the long thread of Jewish culinary tradition while shifting the focus to seasonality and sustainability.

Here is a new way to think about Jewish food. In The Seasonal Jewish Kitchen, Amelia Saltsman takes us far beyond deli meats and kugel to a world of diverse flavors ideal for modern meals. Inspired by the farm-to-table movement, her 150 recipes offer a refreshingly different take on traditional and contemporary Jewish cooking. Amelia traces the delicious thread of Jewish cuisine from its ancient roots to today’s focus on seasonality and sustainability. Guided by the Jewish lunar calendar, she divides the book into six micro-seasons that highlight the deep connection of Jewish traditions to the year’s natural cycles.

There’s More! On Sunday, March 13, Amelia joins local culinary all-star, Janos Wilder, and other Tucson Festival of Books cookbook authors, to create a one-of-a-kind dinner at Wilder’s new Carriage House. This special dinner is a fundraiser for the Tucson J. Please contact Janos Wilder for more information at janos@janos.com.

Simchat Shabbat Special Needs Services @ Congregation Beth Israel
Mar 12 @ 12:00 pm – 12:45 pm

Simchat Shabbat Special Needs Services 2016

Nine Years of Accessible Services!

Council For Jews With Special Needs (CJSN), a nonprofit agency devoted to providing programs, services, and resources to help those in the Jewish Community with disabilities, and their families, is pleased to announce the dates for the 2015-2016 Simchat Shabbat Season.

Saturday, May 28th, September 17th, and December 10th at Congregation Beth Israel

– click here for more 2015-2016 season dates & locations

All services begin at noon and last approximately 45 minutes. The general public is encouraged to join the services.

The first Simchat Shabbat service took place at Congregation Beth Israel (CBI) in 2007. The goal was to have a place where adults with special needs and their families could worship together. The service was created in partnership with CBI including specially designed prayer books that were funded through a generous community grant. With the success of the school year, summer services were added at Temple Emanuel of Tempe. In 2008, Simchat Shabbat won the esteemed Belle Latchman Community Service Award for Best Project Enhancing the Quality of Jewish Life.

“Nine years in, and it is still the most joyous service you will ever attend,” said Stacy Rosenthal, co-creator of Simchat Shabbat. “Everyone is welcome and no one is turned away. The only rule, it is a “no shush” service and a place where God hears all prayers.”

Simchat Shabbat reservations are not required, but appreciated. Please call the CJSN offices at (480) 629-5343 or send an e-mail to debby@cjsn.org, to let us know when you will be joining us, how many in your party, or for any questions.
