Would you like to paint portraits of your family, or sketch strangers while you travel? Discover the joy of portraiture and dispel the myth that it is harder than other subjects. You will learn: proportions, how to render features, how to create soft, believable hair, improve your drawing skills, how to mix skin tones, and overall painting skills. Gain the confidence to paint and draw any person you choose!

Make colorful mosaic tiles of varied shapes and sizes, and use them to fill a wall niche, to make wall decorations or a sculptural tile for your garden, or to cover a table or backsplash. Learn techniques for writing on tiles with fluid glazing or carving. No previous clay experience necessary, all skill levels welcome. Six, two-hour sessions with Instructor Gerrie Young.

Do you have a great idea that might make a terrific book, movie or TV show? Find out what it takes to evaluate the commercial viability of your idea. Learn to do develop the pitch. What do you need to do to get the idea ready to present? How do you create a compelling “logline” to propose to a producer? Learn the tools needed and format for pitching an idea to Hollywood. What are the Ten Criteria for evaluating whether an idea is viable and marketable? This class consists of workshopping your ideas, getting feedback, revising your pitch and watching video clips.
Presenter: Genie Joseph, PhD
Genie is an award-winning filmmaker and former CEO of Hawaii Movie Studios. She is President of Independent Film Arizona and a screenplay judge at a prestigious International screenwriting contest where she reads over 100 scripts a year. She has heard hundreds of pitches for TV, Film, and books. She is a published author and an award-winning screenwriter with five produced movies. She has been teaching Introduction to Motion Pictures and Television at Chaminade University in Honolulu since 2003 and teaches film appreciation at the Jewish Community Center in Tucson. She is currently listening to pitches for TV ideas that can be shot in Tucson with Southern Arizona Video Productions.
This class will focus on lives and achievements of Jewish people in the variety of endeavors: religion and philosophy, science, politics and entertainment . The instructor, Roza Simkhovich is a dynamic and engaging speaker. She will provide you with fascinating information, intellectual stimulation and will excite you with a joy of learning. She is an educator with more than 30 years of experience. Taught at U of A for 23 years, and also variety of classes in Russian and Jewish History and Culture for a number of adult education programs in Tucson.

USHMM PRESENTS “WHAT WERE WE WATCHING?”
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum presents “What Were We Watching? Americans’ Responses to Nazism through Cinema, Radio, and Media” on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7 pm at Arizona State University, Old Main, 400 E. Tyler Mall in Tempe. The program is co-presented with Arizona State University.
Panelists will discuss how Hollywood and leaders in entertainment and government battled for the hearts and minds of Americans. They include Daniel Greene, curator of USHMM’s Americans and the Holocaust exhibition; Kevin Sandler, associate professor in the Film and Media Studies Program at ASU and editor, Reading the Rabbit: Explorations in Warner Bros. Animation. Mi-Ai Parrish, Sue Clark-Johnson professor for Media Innovation and Leadership at ASU and former Arizona Republic publisher will be the moderator.
“This program helps us to understand how Americans were being informed and educated about the Nazi threat during the 1930s and 40s through the variety of different mediums available at that time,” said Marla Abraham, the museum’s Western regional director. “It’s important to know the depths of influence that the entertainment industry and political leaders had in creating awareness to Nazism and the threat to European Jews during World War II.”
