Jewish Jazz Connection Series with the Robin Bessier Band
From Rio with Love: An Evening of Bossa Nova Music
Wednesday, February 14, 6:30 – 8:30 pm
It is said that Bossa Nova – a term that can be translated as “New Trend” “New Wave” or “New Beat”- got it’s unofficial start when the band, “Grupo Universitario Hebraico do Brasil” (Hebrew University Group of Brazil) played a concert in 1957. Their artistic director, Moyses Fuks, is said to have coined the phrase to describe the marriage of samba and jazz that the band represented. The Robin Bessier Quintet reprises the lush harmonies, swaying rhythms and nuanced vocals that were a hallmark of this era for a romantic evening of music. A dance floor will be set up for those who can’t resist moving to Brazil’s warm rhythms.
