The Valley of the Sun JCC announces its Jeff Berkowitz Youth Basketball League. The new league was founded in honor of Jeff Berkowitz, beloved youth basketball coach at The J for many years. In addition to skills, the unique league seeks to teach youth respect for themselves, their peers and their community “Jeff’s Way” through teamwork, sportsmanship, integrity and hard work.
“This league is about more than learning the fundamentals of basketball fundamentals, it is also about learning to work together and to give back,” said Jay Jacobs, CEO. “The league continues the legacy Jeff instilled in the youth he coached for so many years and how he would helped them be champions on the court and in life.”
The league is geared towards boys and girls grades Pre-K-4. Youth learn fundamentals and techniques to improve their game, as well as how to be a champion on and off the court.
League registration is open and play begins Oct. 7. All are welcome, regardless of faith, background or ability. The J’s youth sports programs are in partnership with Steptoe & Johnson LLC.

Occasionally, we meet an older person we admire and think: “I want to be like her when I grow up. I want to be wise, joyful, grateful, compassionate, patient, funny, curious, optimistic!” As Estelle Reiner said in the classic deli scene from When Harry Met Sally: “I want what she’s having.” The question for us as we get older is: what do I need to do now to become the eighty-five-year-old I someday hope to be? What work do I have to do now to acquire a heart of wisdom?

An absolutely hilarious new comedy that’s anything but neighborly! High-powered lawyer Pablo and wife Tania, a doctoral candidate, are working toward the American dream. They move into a well-to-do, mostly white neighborhood in our nation’s capital. A delicate disagreement over a long-standing fence line soon spirals into an all-out, laugh-out-loud comic border dispute, exploring what is an otherwise hot-button issue through a refreshing comedic lens.
