Following a meeting between City of Yuma Mayor, Douglas J. Nicholls and Jewish National Fund-USA (JNF-USA) Central Negev Taskforce Co-Chair, Bruce Goldberg, the organization’s leadership has praised the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the City of Yuma, AZ, and Ramat HaNegev in Israel’s south.
The MoU enables the two regions to work towards bilateral agreements relating to funding for industry technology development and demonstration; advancing research and academia; fostering educational and research exchanges; and encouraging joint ventures between respective businesses.
City of Yuma Mayor, Douglas J. Nicholls said: “Yuma is a worldwide leader of agriculture innovation. This MOU further reinforces that position while supporting local jobs and economic growth by promoting Yuma’s engagement with the global scientific and R&D communities. As our city’s best and brightest exchange the ideas of tomorrow with their counterparts in Israel, our economic growth is accelerated along with our partners in Ramat HaNegev.”

JNF-USA Central Negev Taskforce Co-Chair, Bruce Goldberg added: “The signing of this MoU makes a lot of sense given the similar opportunities and challenges that Yuma and Ramat HaNegev face. Both regions have similar weather, topography, population density, and agriculture industries. This MoU also recognizes Yuma and Ramat HaNegev’s shared values in terms of innovation, perseverance and the pursuit of education.”

The signing of the MoU follows a similar agreement struck 12 months ago between The University of Arizona (UA), Jewish National Fund-USA (JNF-USA), and Israel’s premier agriculture region (the Arava) to establish The JNF Joint Institute for Global Food, Water, and Energy Security.

The Joint Institute will develop tools and design methods to adapt technologies and initiate programs to aid communities in arid and hyper-arid environments with an initial focus on supporting underserved African communities. Over the next three-to-five years, the Joint Institute will establish at least three multi-disciplinary programs in Africa to provide technology transfer, applied research, knowledge, training, on-going guidance, and education.
