The Tucson Jewish Community Center is proud to host the only USA Triathlon Splash & Dash Youth Aquathon in the State of Arizona and in the Southwest, Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015. Tucson is one of 45 cities across the United States designated to host the special event created by the USA Triathlon, whose aim is to introduce youth across the nation to the multisport lifestyle.
What is a Splash and Dash? It is a fun and fast-growing sport that combines running and swimming. The run can take place on a trail, a road or a path. Similarly, the swim can take place in any body of water – a pool, a reservoir, or an ocean. The USA Triathlon’s Youth Splash and Dash Aquathlon Series will feature a swim/run combination. With a focus on participation and fun, this event will be a timed event for the young competitors.
The event at the Tucson J starts at 7 am on Sunday the 16th and will include participants ages 7-15. Athletes in the age group 7-10 will cover a 100-yard swim and a 1-kilometer run, while athletes ages 11-15 will complete a 200-yard swim and a 2k run. To register, visit tucsonjcc.org. Registration is open to all. The cost is $30. Deadline to register is Aug. 15, 2015.
The Tucson J has partnered with local Tucsonan USA Triathlon Level I Coach Robin Kremer, an exercise physiologist and experienced triathlete. Robin is a principle owner of Excell Tri Coaching and iTri Tucson Center at Fitworks in downtown Tucson.
“I feel I have started laying the foundation of our future, with the partnership with the Tucson J on the Youth Triathlon Team, the USAT Splash and Dash and opening the iTri Tucson Center at Fitworks in downtown Tucson for adult beginners,” says Robin. “Both programs focus on the future of the sport and how I can help the youth and adults to reach their dreams.”
Robin began coaching in high school when she assisted the Erie Aquatics Swimming Team in 1985. She has been a swimmer all of her life, starting out on the Erie Aquatics Swimming Team in 1975 and continuing through high school. After high school, she switched to teaching swim lessons at the local YMCA, while attending college at the University of Toledo. Her coaching passion continued through college and well beyond college years with instructing and coaching in Florida at local YMCAs.
Robin career path was in the spa industry, where she managed luxury spas for more than 19 years. In 2013 she retired to launch a new career in the Triathlon. “The career change is to help ‘Tri it Forward,’” she explains.
