Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS), a leading nonprofit organization in Maricopa County, is proud to announce its participation as an exhibitor at the “Mental Health Symposium 2023: Demystifying the Science of Mental Health.” The event will take place on from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, October 21, at Chandler City Hall and is presented by the City of Chandler Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Division in collaboration with Lighthouse Psychiatry Brain Health Center.
The free symposium invites the community to engage with professionals on a range of mental health care topics and treatments. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in children’s activities, connect with exhibitors, identify essential resources, and initiate conversations with individuals about promoting positive mental health. The event aims to equip participants with resources for prevention, intervention and innovation in mental health care.
Highlighted speaker topics for the symposium include:
- The science behind ADHD by Julia Overman, Ph.D.
- Complex trauma amongst first responders and Latina by Emily Meyers, LPC and Estefana Johnson, LCSW
- Trauma amongst youth mental health by Jessica Shoff, LCSW
- Mental health in the LGBTQ+ community (speaker: TBD)
- How psychiatric medications impact different demographics and individuals by Tiffany Jordan, PMHNP
- The rise of interventional psychiatry: TMS, Spravato, and ketamine by Brian Nyberg, M.D.
- The full spectrum of mental health care: continuity of care (speaker: TBD)
As an exhibitor, JFCS will provide community members with free resource materials, answer questions and offer sign-ups for informational e-mails on its latest news, events and services.
MaryJo Whitfield, vice president of behavioral health at JFCS, emphasized the importance of such events, stating, “Since the pandemic, there has been a huge increase in anxiety and depression, among other mental health issues. That’s why events like the Mental Health Symposium are so vital. They provide community members with resources they might not have known existed. JFCS is participating in this event to serve and help community members impacted by mental health issues to live their best lives.”
