Authentic Flaky Halva


Cook up a batch of scrumptious halva in your own kitchen!

Thought you could only get authentic halva in the shuk? ISRAEL21c’s Tayim chef shows you how to make the classic Middle East flaky sesame confection at home.

 

Authentic Flaky Halva

2 cups tahini paste
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1/3 cup shelled pistachios (other toppings: pecans, chocolate chips and whole cashews
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup water

Mix warmed tahini paste with vanilla extract, salt and almond extract.

Mix well and set aside.

Sprinkle shelled pistachios on a parchment strip at the bottom of 2 English cake pans.

Combine sugar and water and heat over medium high heat until the mixture reaches

260 degrees Fahrenheit or 125 degrees Celsius.

Mix in the tahini and stir well.

Pour into the pans and let cool for 4 to 6 hours.

    My parents would buy halva from the Lincoln Dell in Minnesota and weren’t very happy with me when I’d eat the entire package….
