Simchat Shabbat Special Needs Services 2017

Ten Years of Accessible Services!

Council For Jews With Special Needs (CJSN), a nonprofit agency devoted to providing programs, services, and resources to help those in the Jewish Community with disabilities, and their families, is pleased to announce the dates for the 2017 Simchat Shabbat Season.

Saturday, January 7th, February 4th, March 11th, April 8th, and May 6th at Congregation Beth Israel

– click here for more 2015-2016 season dates & locations

All services begin at noon and last approximately 45 minutes. The general public is encouraged to join the services.

The first Simchat Shabbat service took place at Congregation Beth Israel (CBI) in 2007. The goal was to have a place where adults with special needs and their families could worship together. The service was created in partnership with CBI including specially designed prayer books that were funded through a generous community grant. With the success of the school year, summer services were added at Temple Emanuel of Tempe. In 2008, Simchat Shabbat won the esteemed Belle Latchman Community Service Award for Best Project Enhancing the Quality of Jewish Life.

“Nine years in, and it is still the most joyous service you will ever attend,” said Stacy Rosenthal, co-creator of Simchat Shabbat. “Everyone is welcome and no one is turned away. The only rule, it is a “no shush” service and a place where God hears all prayers.”

Simchat Shabbat reservations are not required, but appreciated. Please call the CJSN offices at (480) 629-5343 or send an e-mail to debby@cjsn.org, to let us know when you will be joining us, how many in your party, or for any questions.

Be a Hero: Donate Blood @TKA @ Temple Kol Ami
Apr 9 @ 8:00 am – 1:00 pm

Be a hero! Donate blood on Sunday, April 9 at Temple Kol Ami during our American Red Cross blood drive from 8AM to 1PM.

Did you know …

  • Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood.
  • Nearly 7,000 units of platelets and 10,000 units of plasma are needed each day.
  • Although an estimated 38% of Americans are eligible to give blood, less than 10% of the population actually does
  • The blood donation process is safe and sterile. Each donor is given a mini-physical, checking the donor’s temperature, blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin to ensure it is safe for the donor to give blood.

Your donation is needed: you could save a life. All who generously decide to donate will receive light refreshments (and a big high five from our event organizer, Susan Guzman!)

The entire process, including registration, medical history, mini-physical, donation and refreshments takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. (FYI – the actual blood donation typically takes 10-12 minutes.) Donors may save time by completing a RapidPass on the day of donation at www.redcrossblood.org/rapidpass.

Please reserve your donation appointment by RSVPing to Susan Guzman at sutyguz@gmail.com or call Temple Kol Ami at 480-951-9660. Thank you for being a blood donor!

Spring Financial Literacy Program – Family Friendly Financials @ The Play Factory
Apr 9 @ 10:30 am

Jewish Free Loan is pleased to announce their Spring Financial Literacy Programs for members of the Phoenix Jewish community. After great interest and success running these programs over the past few years, JFL recognized the need to increase our educational programming and is dedicated to expanding the Financial Literacy Program even further in the coming year.

Family Friendly Financials, for young families with children through age 6, will take place at 10:30 am on April 9 at a location to be announced shortly. This program will be held in partnership with PJ Library and families will participate in an interactive program where they will learn about the importance of tzedakah and how to give as a family. During story time led by PJ Library, parents will have the opportunity to speak with a financial professional about how to save, spend and give in a way that will set their family up for financial success.

Programs are free and reservations can be made by contacting 602-230-7983 or info@jewishfreeloan.org. For more information and event details, follow the Jewish Free Loan Facebook Page (facebook.com/jewishfreeloanAZ).
