TISHA B’AV is a fast day that commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples in ancient times.
It has become a day of general mourning for other major disasters that have befallen the Jewish people, such as the Edict of Expulsion from England in 1290; the expulsion from Spain in 1492; and the mass deportation from the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II.
