Matti Friedman is the author of Pumpkinflowers: A Soldier’s Story, a war memoir of the often forgotten events that took place in the 1990s at the Pumpkin, a small military outpost in Lebanon. His first book, The Aleppo Codex, won the 2014 Sami Rohr Prize, the American Library Association’s Sophia Brody Medal, the Canadian Jewish Book Award and other honors. It was published in Israel, Australia, Holland, France, Germany, the Czech Republic, Russia and South Korea.
Friedman’s reporting has taken him from Israel to Lebanon, Morocco, Moscow and the Caucasus, and his writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post and elsewhere. He is a former Associated Press correspondent and a regular contributor to Tablet Magazine. Two essays he wrote about media coverage of Israel after the 2014 Gaza War, for Tablet and The Atlantic, triggered intense discussion and have been shared together on Facebook more than 100,000 times. He was born in Toronto and lives in Jerusalem.

Please join Schmooze to celebrate the start to summer with a pool party and a BBQ on Saturday, June 3. The event will be hosted at a private home near Central Avenue and Thomas Road. Note that we will not be having children in attendance at this event due to no fencing around the pool. This event is in partnership with AVIV of Arizona (http://www.avivaz.com). Jewish Family & Children’s Service is hosting a crisis and response training for professionals and paraprofessionals from Jewish faith-based organizations. The training will take place at Temple Chai, 4645 E Marilyn Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85032 on Tuesday, April 24 from 6 – 8:30 pm. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required.
When a crisis occurs in the Phoenix Jewish community, these trained volunteers will be available to offer immediate support services to help those impacted cope with the aftermath of the crisis.
This three-hour training will give participants the opportunity to enhance their crisis intervention skills and gives the volunteers additional insight into the challenges faced by the community in the wake of a crisis situation.
Participants will leave the training with the skills to provide culturally sensitive responses to those in crisis, including those that have been victims of a hate crime, as well as a deeper understanding of how people heal through EMDR therapy.
The training session will be presented by Ira Dressner, Ph.D., LCSW, EMDR Consultant and Trainer, and Liana Dressner, MSW, LCSW, EMDR Consultant. Ira Dressner graduated from the Maxwell School of Public Affairs with a MPA and Ph.D. He has been a psychotherapist and counselor for 26 years and specializes in trauma. Liana Dressner graduated with her bachelor’s in social work and Master’s in Social Work from New York University.
As the Phoenix Pride Parade approaches on October 22nd, Temple Chai members are donning Jewish Pride t-shirts and getting ready to join the procession. They’re holding a special pride Shabbat on October 20th and invite all to join in the festivities.
