What I Like About Camp

At Camp Newman, you have lots of fun. The moment you pull up, all the CITs are outside singing Hevenu Shalom Aleichem. Kids feel so special. The weather is beautiful the whole time. It is so much fun to meet your cabinmates, but the next day is when the fun really begins. Every day you have pool, cabin activities and electives. Some cabin activities include a hike, the Alpine climbing tower, the rock wall, the zip-line, Israeli dancing and much more. Electives include drama, photography, video, art, mountain biking, sports and many other options. Every night we do fun activities with our cabin. Meals are great! We have a half-hour song/prayer session before dinner and we say the Birkat afterwards.

But the most special time at camp is Shabbat. On Friday afternoons, we get “Shabbations.” “Shabbations” are options on Shabbat like “Shabbat sh-coloring,” or “Shabbat sh-star hike.” They all change every week and they are run by great counselors. Then we get to watch the staff vs. CIT frisbee game. After that we have an extremely fun, 45-minute Shabbat evening service. It’s nothing like sitting through a boring Yom Kippur service. Shabbat dinner is the best meal of the week. They serve chicken, rice, pita, hummus, vegetables and always have a tofu or vegetarian option. After dinner we go to the basketball court and sing and dance to all kinds of Jewish songs. Saturday morning we have cinnamon rolls and coffee cake for breakfast. Then we have fun, special activities all day long, including a really short, fun torah service. Shabbat at camp is the best! Jewish summer camp is so much fun. Plus, it’s also educational and a great opportunity.
