The magic of Cinderella comes alive at Gammage

Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella Broadway National Tour is currently at ASU Gammage through Dec. 24, and it should not be missed. I had the pleasure of seeing the show on opening night and I felt as if I was living the fairytale with the rest of the cast. It has the usually story elements featuring the ball, the glass slippers, the pumpkin carraige – but there are also some unique twists.

I had the opportunity to chat with one of the cast members of this stunning production, Erin Weinberger. Erin is a member of the ensemble and an understudy for the parts of Charlotte (one of the evil stepsisters) and Madame (evil stepmother).

“I have been on tour with Cinderella since September and I will be on tour until July,” says Erin. “This is my first tour. I’ve done a couple of regional shows, where I stayed in one place for two or three months, but a tour is moving around constantly.”

Erin has been dancing her whole life. “My mom put me in dance lessons and I have never stopped,” she says. “I also got into musical theater at 14 with my community theater, and I did shows frequently there.”

She also is a massage therapist and is taking online classes through Arizona State University towards a degree in kinesiology. While she was in school for massage therapy a friend got her an unusual job – as a stilt walker.

“I took the stilt walking class and have been a stilt walker ever since,” says Erin. She performs in parades in New York and New Jersey, and she even was in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade once.

When she is not touring, she has called New York home for the past four years. She is originally from Sarasota, FL and her family still lives there. She is excited that the tour will be finishing in Florida in July and she will get to see her family.

She tries to observe Shabbat, but admits it’s difficult when they have a show on Friday night. She was excited about Hanukkah and had her menorah set up.

Erin says that although not having a home base can be challenging, she is really enjoying the experience, “The cast is amazing, we all get along so well, the show is stunning and truly magical. Everything is top notch, and it’s cool to be part of a production like this.”
